3 Mistakes You Should Avoid when Choosing Essay Topics

Not all essay topics are created equal. There are some topics that are no good for writing an essay on. These topics will cause you a lot of grief. They will make your paper consume way too much time.

Choosing an essay topic is one of the hardest parts of writing an essay. There are three mistakes that you should avoid when choosing essay topics.

  1. The first mistake that you should avoid is choosing a topic that is too broad.

When you choose a topic that is too broad, you will end up having a hard time writing an essay about it. A broad subject will have numerous sub topics to consider and it is really hard to get all of that information into an essay format.

  2. The second mistake that you should avoid is choosing a topic that is too narrow.

Now I know you are thinking “picky” but it is true. A subject that is too narrow will also cause you to have trouble writing your essay because there will not be enough information to write about. A subject that is too narrow will make it hard to come up with enough supporting reasons why it is true. The key number of supporting facts is three for a five paragraph essay.

  3. The third mistake that you should avoid is choosing a subject that you are not interested in.

Now you may not always have a choice in this matter especially if you are asked to write an essay that is specific to a topic. However, if you have a choice, choose something that sparks your interest or one that makes you think. This can be important in the long run because you don’t want to be bored. When you have to write about a topic that you are passionate about, it is easier. Writing needs passion. You can use the topic as an inspiration.

To avoid these mistakes it is necessary to do some research first. Try to think of a broad topic and start researching it. Once you find some information, you can start to narrow the topic down enough until you have a topic that is not too broad. You can start to develop three solid reasons to support a train of thought. You should be able to start assimilating the information into three subtopics in which you can use to draw a conclusion and write your thesis.
